The Chelmsford Ballet Company

Joan Weston was a very busy lady! Having established The Weston School in 1939 she went on to set up The Broomfield YMCA Ballet Company in 1947 to give a performance opportunity to her senior students. In 1949 the Company performed at the Shire Hall, leading the Mayor of Chelmsford to suggest its name be changed to the Chelmsford Ballet Company. A small committe met and the Company came into being.

The Chelmsford Ballet Company was one of the founder members of the Chelmsford Amateur Arts Festival, sadly no longer in existence. They were very lucky for many years to be able to rehearse in Duhy, a wonderful studio in the grounds of Sir Neil Sutherland's property in Springfield Green.

Since the early days students from The Weston have danced with the company after successfully passing auditions. More recently, a Corporate member scheme was introduced and The Weston became its first such member.
